Course Description: This course introduces students to the majors in Japanese Language and Culture, Spanish or World Language and Cultures. Students acquire knowledge and understanding needed to fulfill Major Learning Outcomes for the programs. Students identify and work with a major adviser to develop individual learning plans. The course examines opportunities in related professional and career paths, including graduate education and teaching credential preparation.
Course Narrative: Personally this course has introduced me to a variety of topics that I will be studying like culture and literature and providing some guidance in navigating my major. We spent a large portion of the class getting to learn our personal culture and sharing this with the class. We also learned about linguistic concepts and we presented a 5 minute talk about a concept within our target language. This was a great way to ease us into the major and bridge it to personal development. Besides information about what I will be studying at CSUMB, the course informed us how to develop a professional portfolio of our work here at CSUMB, as well as how to properly write a personal statement and format a resume. The course also taught us beyond the journey here at CSUMB and went into graduate and credential programs. The course inspired me by bringing in outside resources and success stories of CSUMB graduate students who too completed this course and are now successful and prosperous in or currently pursuing masters and doctorate degrees. The course also informed me of possible career paths and master, doctoral and teaching credential programs. In doing this, the class had me thinking about a carousel of possible steps I need to take for each graduate program. At the time I had confirmed that I will pursue a single-subject teaching credential, but of course things change. Besides thinking about the future, the course brought in career services to teach us about job applications and how to make a well equipped resumeand cover letter. The resume and personal statement can be found on the home page, as well as here in the text. This course met MLO 6.
