- Course Description: This course is part of your Spanish language learning experience, and offers you the opportunity to interact in a personal way with members of the local Latino community, thereby enriching your understanding of Hispanic cultures and the Spanish language. As a community-based learning experience, the course provides students with career-related experience working collaboratively with community agencies to address community concerns / issues.
- Course Narrative: This course features multiple topics related to the the Latinx community and how the cultures vary in relation to other cultures. For my service site in particular, the misconnections that occur between the culture differences and the language barrier. The course brought forward a variety of articles and testimonials that opened our eyes and sparked discussion. Many of these discussions revealed seeing our own privileges and marginalized identities. Besides the classroom portion, we were required to choose a service site that involved interaction and services to the Latinx/ Chicanx community. This service learning experiences have taught me a great deal about the struggles and problems the Hispanic community faces. More information about my service site and experience can be found here.
