Courses Taken:
MLO 1 Narrative:
Major Learning Outcome 1 was very straightforward, and a majority of the classes I took that, were instructed in Spanish, met this MLO and focused on all three modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational). Besides this, each course brought an aspect of the history or culture of the Spanish language. Although the classes fit into other categories like literature, culture and linguistics, we had plenty of class and group discussions in Spanish and were assigned at least one presentation per class.
My first semester, I took two courses that met this MLO. The first was Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics that tackled some tough concepts like phonemes and morphology and this course pushed my interpretive skills to the max. Apart from this, we were given the skills to discuss complicated concepts within the context of every conversation around the Spanish speaking world. We dug even deeper into culture, by studying the localisms and morphologies found within multiple regions of the Spanish speaking world. The second course I took was service learning and this helped my Spanish language development exponentially as we discussed social justice issues and listened to and discussed multiple perspectives. Going out into the community and practicing Spanish with native speakers while serving the community was a major factor in my growth.
My second semester, I took two courses that met this MLO with the first being Advanced Spanish Grammar. Although the course featured a majority of linguistic based concepts, we spent a large portion of the class doing in-group discussions and then presentations of our group findings. It targets culture by giving famous pieces of literature and pop culture to analyze and look for certain concepts. My second class was Hispanic Testimonies and this course was filled with interpretation as we read multiple short stories and excerpts from books showcasing the unpublicised history of marginalized people. The class also had a big interview project tied to the course and this allowed us to develop interview questions and lead interviews and learn the process of transcribing the information.
In my last two semesters I have been perfecting and crystalizing the Spanish Language knowledge I have been exposed to in my past semester and have met this MLO by taking a majority of my courses in Spanish. My intro to literature developed my vocabulary of literary tools and this brought forth a lot of new vocabulary. My Spanish Composition and Oral practice course was a class based on communication and using the three modes effectively. The course I feel developed my Language Proficiency the most was Spanish for the Professions as it enriched my vocabulary weekly and forced in class discussions about videos we watched during the class. This course tested our interpretive skills to the max and did this in a way that our vocabulary levels rose subsequently.
