MLO 6 Narrative:
6.1 Major Learning Outcome 6 was something that was ingrained into us with every course we took, as we had many research projects and presentations to be done. In practically every course, we were taught the different databases to be used for certain types of research. We learned how to use the library’s general system, One Search, and then from there learned how to narrow down our options. With this, we learned how to verify whether articles were peer reviewed and how to cite the sources. One interesting distinction we focused on was the difference between doing research for sociology and psychology and linguistic related topics in APA, and doing research on culture and literature in MLA. Although we touch upon research in many of our courses, our capstone and pre-capstone courses primarily focus on research and teach us to be critical and insightful readers. Along this process, we receive support from our major’s librarian and fine tune our undergraduate research skills.
6.2 When studying anything related to Spanish language and Hispanic cultures and literature there are many concepts and subjects that contain locolisms and this is where technological use comes into play. We are taught the art of translation, as well as how to use general translation sites with a critical eye. We learn to do single word translation with websites instead of translating whole sentences and paragraphs and this is very beneficial to our language acquisition. Besides this we learn how to use technology properly to record interviews so they are clear and easy to transcribe. On top of our technology we used for research, we also learned to create a web page that effectively demonstrates our courses and skills developed throught our journy at CSUMB.
6.3 The course that targets this the most is our whole pre-capstone and capstone development experience. We first started doing general research on what possible topic we wanted to study, then narrowed down on two pieces of literature. Before we even dove in the book, we were coached through finding peer reviewed articles about the books to see if the concepts within the books would work towards a focused research topic. This process involved utilizing databases effectively. From this point on we read the books and then began to analyze the topics within the books and what background information was needed. We were able to learn how to effectively write a literature review and worked on analyzing each book and comparing the concepts within the books.
